As part of this 2011 RIBA award winning renovation of the Arkwright and Newton buildings we were contracted to design, manufacture and install stairs, walkways/pedestrian link bridges, balustrades, handrails and other architectural metalwork.
The main foyer stair in the Arkwright building is a wide span type suitable for the traffic of a busy university building. The landing section of the stair is supported from the dual chs columns.
The link bridge steelwork includes castellated beams to reduce the weight of the sections whilst maintaing the structural integrity and also provides an architectural feature. On this project we provided individual bridges and also bridges linked to staircases. Vibration is often a factor with large span stairs or bridges and JSM are experienced in designing and executing this type of work.
This functional back of house application comprises of horizontal bar balustrades bolted to sides of the stair stringers. The stair treads have been screed filled and then a rubber insert has been fitted. All metal/steelwork has then been finished in a grey powder coat finish.
